Being able to use electricity is something very normal in our lives. Most of us cannot even remember the days without electricity. Plug in a device and it works. But where does this electricity actually come from? And how much does the connected appliance actually use? And how much electricity do you use in total per day, week, month or year? All questions many of us will never ask ourselves.

However, when you start living off-grid, these are things you suddenly become very aware of. And that’s a good thing! Because ultimately our goal is to start living more and more consciously and to take others along with us.

After years of living on various projects, we have already increased our awareness of electricity considerably. However, when you start your own project and suddenly have to think about how much electricity you expect to consume, it gets really interesting. How many panels do we need? How many batteries do we need? If the sun doesn’t shine, how long do we want the batteries to last? What do we do when the batteries run out?

Ultimately, this all depends on how much energy you consume. And it’s so easy to go along with today’s consumer society but at the end of the day, much of the energy we use every day is not needed at all.

A dryer, dishwasher machine, air conditioner… do we really need them? And washing? Should that always be done in the evening or can we just do it during the day when the sun is shining? The fridge, do we really need it in winter and/or at night? All these are personal choices. For us, the most important thing is to make them consciously.

For the past few months, we have been living on a mobile power bank with a small solar panel. This went fine. So we can live with very little energy but in the end a little bit more would have been nice. For example, to run the fridge. So we bought our system with the future in mind. We chose to be able to run on the stored energy for at least 3 days when in bad weather. If we are economical, this could even be extended by several days.

Because we have a large property, it also took quite a lot of cable to bring all the electricity to the various locations. In total, we had to lay more than 350 metres of cable. In the end, we got the installation all done in 2.5 days.

We have electricity!
