This transport cart has gone through many different shapes and versions. Nonetheless, we wanted to share this project because it is a relatively simple and inexpensive project that we use a lot. A wheelbarrow works in many cases, but for moving larger quantities or longer items, this cart is fantastic. Examples include pallets, refrigerators, furniture, (fire)wood, mattresses, bricks, roofing sheets, etc.
Version 1 was made entirely of wood. It worked well, but the basic construction was quite heavy, making it harder to maneuver. This new model features two aluminum tubes and a frame made of slats, making it very light yet extremely strong and stable.
The wheels are from wheelbarrows and are mounted as far to the end of the tubes as possible to create the largest possible lever. In the previous model, the beams extended a bit further to position the center of gravity more over the axle of the wheels, but this often caused overhanging items on the cart to hit the ground, especially when walking downhill. This would cause items to fall off and make it inconvenient. This problem has been solved with the new design.
By extending the tubes further, the lever has also been increased, making it easier for one person to lift and move very heavy items.
This model accommodates flat materials like pallets, but with the addition of small blocks that can be raised on the carrying surface, supports can be created on the sides and back. This allows for transporting round objects, such as logs, without them rolling off the cart. The carrying surface is slightly angled forward. Once the cart is lifted, all materials lie horizontally relative to the ground, preventing them from sliding during transport.
The cart is used very frequently, and we are very happy with it.
