With 11 hectares of land, much of it forest and many fruit trees, it’s inevitable to have a lot of pruning waste. In Spain, it is quite common to burn this waste. We do this too, but with a very specific purpose: making Biochar.

Biochar is a wonderful product, but you can also simply have too much. For this reason, we purchased a woodchipper. Initially, we got a small (blue) one that we had good experiences with on another project. However, it quickly proved to be too small and impractical for a project of our size. So, it was time to look for a larger model.

We eventually settled on the Sakawa BS1505, our new orange beast! This machine devours branches like they’re nothing, and with its large intake, it processes them quite quickly. The package was delivered neatly in a wooden crate on a pallet.

We mainly use the wood chips on the paths. This not only looks great but also functions to keep plants from growing on the paths and to retain moisture in the ground for longer. We noticed the effect immediately on a rainy day when the ground had become muddy and slippery. After spreading wood chips, the paths were instantly more navigable.

In our opinion, this has been one of the best purchases for our project.
